Salt effectively lived on an unearned income, having retired from teaching in his mid-thirties. He rented the Tilford cottage and was moving about in Brighton because he was renting. He lived in very straightened circumstances, but actually bought his last house having sold correspondence from George Bernard Shaw (on GBS's suggestion) to an American collector. (S.W)
