Hymn of Thanksgiving

Hymn of Thanksgiving

(To be sung at St. Paul’s Cathedral on the conclusion of the war.)

We thank thee, O, God of Battles, that our holy war is done,
And by thy grace we have conquered, though we were but ten to one.
O, Lord, thine only is vengeance!
We have worked thy wondrous will,
And have waded through blood and pillage to avenge Majuba Hill.
O, Christ, who didst love the gentle, by thy sweet spirit led
We have warred on women and children, and burned their very bread.
And now, with a hell behind us, and our clasped hands red with gore,
We draw nigh, O Lord, to worship on this thy sacred floor.
Bow down, O, God, and bless us, who have filched the land of the free;
Lo! Reeking of theft and murder, we give the glory to thee!
