Homes

Henry Salt effectively lived on an unearned income, having retired from teaching in his mid-thirties. He rented the Tilford cottage and was moving about in Brighton because he was renting. He lived in very straightened circumstances, but actually bought his last house having sold correspondence from George Bernard Shaw (on GBS's suggestion) to an American collector.

The watercolour print, dated 1899, is of a cottage that the Salts stayed in many times on their holidays in Snowdonia. It is located in a hillside close to the village of Capel Curig. It is a semi detached property, Salt stayed in the section nearest to the painter. It is referred to as "Gelli Cottage" in On Cambrian and Cumbrian Hills and The Story of my Cousins. Thank you to Alan Williams kindly allowing us to post the picture here. The young girl featued in the painting is Alan's grandmother.
